“_________ is canceled.”

There has been so much talk this week about what is canceled and what is postponed and who has been asked to work from home and all the disruption that the #coronavirus pan(dem)ic has caused. There are never any guarantees but, today, everything seems particularly uncertain. How can we find anything positive in all of this?

First: disruption can be a good thing. Natalye Paquin, President & CEO of Points of Light, “If we look at eras of significant change throughout history, each was preceded by a period of disruption.” Disruption can bring about change. Marc Benioff often speaks to the fact that “Salesforce is synonymous with innovation and disruption…” If Salesforce had not disrupted the market, most of us would not have the luxury of being able to work from home. As disruptive as the current situation is, it can be a catalyst to #domoregood. Making the world a better place is the passion that I wake up with every morning hoping to fulfill in some small way.

Maybe we can create some positive change in the wake of disruption.

Second: until a few days ago, most of the last half of March 2020 was blocked on my calendar for travel and the various conferences where I was speaking. Travel is my second passion. And there is nothing that I love to do more than go somewhere, especially somewhere I’ve never visited, and meet new people and see old friends and make new ones. The cancelations have been so disappointing — especially for the grassroots organizers who put so much time, energy, and funding into the events. As sad as the cancelations are, unexpectedly, I have chunks of time that I can reallocate. I have a list!

  1. Some remodeling that needs to happen at my house;
  2. Concentrated studying for Sales Cloud Consultant and Platform Developer 1 that I need; and,
  3. The beta and launch of a brand new product. (stay tuned)

Maybe, I’ll actually have time to get these things done.

For those of us that have worked from home for years, it’s nice to have some company. The advantages of working from home are being extolled instead of scorned. There are new resources on how to be most productive and most collaborative while working from home. Suddenly, online #coffeebreaks are popping up all over the place; I have been an Ohana Coffee devotee for some time. I was thrilled to jump into just such a coffee break with Leah McGowen-Hare; met some new people and saw some old friends. And there is more talk of more informal, online get togethers.

Maybe there are new ways we will discover to connect and get to know each other.

Most people don’t enjoy change. I can always tell when Facebook has a new release because my hubby is moaning, “Why fix it if it isn’t broken?”. When the change is prompted by something as unknown and frightening as the #coronavirus, it’s particularly uncomfortable and scary. But, one day, when the travel bans are lifted and the vaccine is in full supply and the events are all reinstated, what if we had used this time of disruption to implement positive changes?

In the meantime, hang in there, stay healthy, and share your ideas on how we can turn maybes into “Yes! This is how we can make the world a better place for everyone.”
